Admissions Evaluations
Campbell Psychological Services, LLC (CPS) is an assessment center for many independent private schools in the Washington Metropolitan area. CPS has been conducting admissions evaluations for private schools in the area since 1992.
Why are the tests needed?
Schools use these tests as they consider your child’s suitability for admission or continuation at their school. It is my understanding that independent schools use these tests as one of several criteria in the admissions process. The decision to admit or deny entrance into independent school(s) is at the sole discretion of the school.
What tests are administered?
The most commonly used tests are the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fifth Edition (WISC-V) and the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV). The WISC-V and WPPSI-IV are intelligence tests, which purportedly measure a child’s overall ability level. The WPPSI-IV is administered to children who are under six years of age. The WISC-V is administered to children who are six years of age and older. Your child’s performance will be statistically adjusted so that it can be compared with other children in the same age range. These tests are administered individually and it is not possible for a parent to be present. The assessment is a measure of how your child performed at the time of the testing which could be influenced by several factors. It is not possible to make definitive conclusions or a diagnosis based on the administration of one test instrument.
What can I expect at an Admissions Testing Visit?
When a child is seen for an admissions test, the parent is interviewed first about their child. Next, the child meets with the psychologist independently for testing while the parent waits in the reception area.
What should I bring to the appointment?
Only a parent or legal guardian can consent to have a child evaluated. Parents will complete an Authorization to Release Information which will permit the psychologist to send a report to a designated school. Parents will need the following information to complete an Authorization to Release Information: Admissions Director, Name, Address and Telephone Numbers of the schools that they would like to receive a report.
Can I have my child tested even if I don’t know the school to which I am applying?
Yes. If a parent has not selected a school at the time of the testing appointment, they can send the Authorization to Release Information by fax at a later date. Written consent which identifies to whom the report should be sent can be faxed to 301-589-2838.
